Intense Winds Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as strong winds lash the country.

Intense gusts hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced authorities to cancel in excess of 100 air travel services, as reported by domestic outlets.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing these major districts.

Residents have been urged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes mainly in the South Island, while officials state that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a incident that was captured in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights in and out of the metropolis have been halted because of the winds, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have issued a crisis declaration, to assist emergency management operations.

Strike Action Amid Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on today come as tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been termed a "mega strike", calling for better pay and working conditions.

However the severe conditions has compelled them to alter various scheduled activities, with several external protests moved indoors or abandoned.

Comparable winds are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Authorities have declared flame prohibitions for concern about wildfires.
